“The Generous Listener is Ready to be Surprised”

Krista Tippett, the host of the public radio show, On Being, was interviewed by Debbie Millman. These sentences from Krista around 30 minutes in popped up on my “important radar.”

“The Generous Listener is Ready to be Surprised”

“[Listening].. it’s a virtuous practice…. it’s just like anything else, you have to develop muscle memory. And also the good news about virtuous practices is that you can’t be afraid of it just because you are not good at it, or you haven’t done it very much… the whole point is – you won’t be great at it at first, like anything you haven’t done much. But you have to do it. You have to practice it and the whole discipline of being truly curious, being willing to be surprised, which can feel kind of strange, when what we are trying to do is represent our opinions… or we think we have to win, or like we have to be right, an that that’s what’s at stake. Those are instincts that are well worn, and well developed, and so it’s a process of becoming more aware of those and finding ways to still them, and the more you do it… the better you get.”
